Times Union Editorial

First published: Sunday, August 10, 2008

Times Union editorial page editor Howard Healy has retired after a 33 -year-career as an editor at the Times Union and at the former Knickerbocker News. His successor is Jay Jochnowitz, the Times Union's former state editor.

"Our opinion pages have been graced and strengthened by Howard's sharp and thoughtful analysis of issues and elegantly written editorials," said Joann Crupi, editor/opinion pages. "Many of us in the newsroom who have sought his advice over the years are better at our craft because of his guidance. For all of that, we are immensely grateful."

Jochnowitz's appointment comes at a challenging time for newspapers, in general, and for opinion journalism, in particular, Crupi, said. Jochnowitz will work to expand the reach of the opinion pages in print and online.

Healy, 67, joined the Times Union in 1975 as a, city editor. He moved to The Knickerbocker News in 1979, serving as state editor and night city editor before becoming editorial page editor in 1981. Healy was named Times Union editorial page editor in 1988, when the two newspapers merged.

He previously held reporting and editing posts at the Troy Record, the Courier-Journal in Louisville, Ky., and the Washington bureau of The Wall Street Journal.

A Troy native, he holds a bachelor's degree from Siena College and a master's degree in communications from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He and his wife, Anne Marie, live in Guflderland. They have one daughter.

Jochnowitz, 51, has been with the Times Union since 1987. He covered Albany City Hall for more than a decade, and became state editor in 2000, supervising coverage of state government and politics through the Pataki, Spitzer and Paterson administrations.

He previously worked for the Watertown Daily Times as a city hall reporter and humor columnist. He also was a general assignment reporter for the weeldy Smithtown Messenger.

Jochnowitz is a native of Long Island and a 1978 graduate of Skidmore College. He and his wife, Lisa, live in Knox. They have three children.
