Oh, brother … ex-DA Paul Clyne’s sibling endorses ‘Dave’ Soares for re-election

Is blood thicker than water?

Well, if that water is rain falling at Albany County District Attorney David Soares’ re-election announcement, perhaps the answer is no.

On Monday, when Soares formally kicked off his run for a third term in Academy Park (which is its own story) he received an effusive endorsement from Albany County Democratic Committee Chairman Matthew Clyne, whose brother, former District Attorney Paul Clyne, lost to Soares in a stunning 2004 party primary.

Et tu, Matthew?

“It goes without saying that in these very challenging economic times, there’s increased stress placed on the criminal justice system,” Clyne told the crowd of local officials, union representatives, defense lawyers and prosecutors from his office. “Dave’s done a good job in responding to that. He’s done a very good job trying to balance off all the different factors that go into running a legal office, a district attorney’s office, in today’s world. So it’s my pleasure to endorse Dave. ”

When the Times Union later asked Clyne if it was weird at all to endorse Soares, he said, “You know, politics is politics. Things change and you move on. Dave is the endorsed candidate of our committee so we’re supporting him. I feel Dave should be re-elected and I think clearly most of the Albany County Democratic Committee membership shares the same sentiments.”
